  1. Anagen Phase the hair is growing at an average of 1 centimeter per month.
  2. Catagen Phase the hair stops growing and remains for a couple of weeks.
  3. Telogen Phase the hair prepares to detach from the scalp.
Around the third stage of the cycle, a strand falls out and a new hair starts growing from the follicle in its place, starting the cycle anew. You can determine the cause of your hair loss problem depending on how your hair's growth cycle is affected.

What Causes Excess Hair Shedding?

Excess hair shedding is medically known as telogen effluvium and it basically means having more than 10% of your strands stuck in the telogen phase of the cycle at the same time. It's not unusual to start shedding hair excessively after going through irregular conditions like:
